Rose: I love you Jack.
Jack: No... don't you say your good-byes, Rose. Don't you give up. Don't do it.
Rose: I'm so cold.
Jack: You're going to get out of this... you're going to go on and you're going to make
babies and watch them grow and you're going to die an old lady, warm in your bed.
Not here. Not this night. Do you understand me?
Rose: I can't feel my body.
Jack: Rose, listen to me. Listen. Winning that ticket was the best thing that ever happened
to me. It brought me to you. And I'm thankful, Rose. I'm thankful.
Jack: You must do me this honor... promise me you will survive... that you will never give up... no matter what happens... no matter
how hopeless... promise me now, and never let go of that promise.
Rose: I promise
Jack: Never let go.
Rose: I promise. I will never let go, Jack. I'll never let go.
The above was one of the most touching scenes in the film. It has stayed in my mind to haunt me ever since leaving the cinema. Everytime the love theme "My Heart Will Go On" plays, I think of this scene and just about nearly cry, every time. Not from sadness so much as the totally selfless, unselfish love Jack & Rose had for one another and how much so many people would give to find love like that. It was true; nothing on earth could come between them. Not even death. When Jack says "Don't do that. Don't you say your goodbyes...", he means it, for it is not a goodbye. He will always be a part of her..... he will never leave her. And in him dying, it the love is sealed with this timeless quality... of course it would have been gorgeous if they could have lived and loved in real life, and not just in memory, but it is difficult to see how things would have worked out.
It was wonderful that Rose went on and got married and had babies and did all of the things Jack said she should. He really did save her and she let herself be saved. She didn't allow losing him to get her down and she didn't go into a depression or commit suicide... that was not what he wanted. As he said in the locker room, he couldn't walk away without knowing she was going to be alright. But then he also realizes that he can't save her, that she is the only one who can save herself... and drawing from the strength he leaves her, she does save herself.
I saw this film with Ju-Ven and it reminded me of how special the love we had for one another was. It taught me that one need not, must not, wait for a disaster of the size of Titanic to happen before one shows one's love for one another. Life is too precious and too short. Love is a celebration and should be enjoyed to the full. Always. And love is not about following rituals, about having the "right" partner. Love is elusive, impossible to define. But when you love, when you truly love, you'll know it. You'll never be able to articulate exactly how you feel, but you feel a certain sort of bliss.
Love is when you watch Titanic and think of the person you are in love with, while reminding yourself of how lucky you are.
For all those who have not yet watched Titanic, I recommend it extremely strongly. It is not merely a good evening's entertainment, it is an experience. You feel you are with Jack and Rose on the ship, living their every moment of joy, hope, pain... as one writer put it, Titanic is not just a myth, parable or metaphor for the ills of mankind, it is a story of faith, courage, sacrifice and, above all else, love.
