FLICKS INTERVIEW WITH BARBRA STREISAND

Patrick Stoner: Isn't it odd how much we all need love in our lives? You would think we would grow out of it.

Barbra Streisand: Oh, it makes everything more ALIVE. People, things, the air itself -- EVERYthing is just more alive. Sex is wonderful.

Stoner: I believe I said "love." Interesting that you should have heard "sex."

Streisand: They go together. We don't like to admit it, but they do. At least, in romantic love they do. That's what I'm talking about. You can try to separate them, as Jeff's character does in the movie, but you can't. Women can't, and men can't -- well, not always anyways.

Stoner: It's eerie, isn't it, that we're so controlled by something inside of us?

Streisand: Well, it makes us frightened -- frightened of losing it, frightened of rejection, frightened of being lonely.

Stoner: It almost seems preprogrammed to end, doesn't it -- sometimes?

Streisand: Yes, unless you choose the right person -- well, "choose," maybe not that. It's almost like karma. I'm taking some classes now that are just beginning to deal with this. We're studying the most mystical book of the Torah, and it deals with energy, and light, and love. I'm just getting into it, but it's fascinating.

Stoner: Great. Just what YOU need -- another project. Jeff [Bridges -- her costar in THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES] was saying, "I was nervous going into this -- Barbra as my costar, Barbra as director, would they get in each other's way? -- I didn't know at first. Then we started shooting, and I realized she could separate the two things." Now, how do you do that?

Streisand: You know, there are certain things that ARE mystical. A friend asked me recently, "Why are you so passionate about so many things, civil rights, politics, justice, and so forth?" And I said, "Why do I like chocolate?" I just like chocolate, you know what I mean?

Stoner: You are who you are...

Streisand: Exactly. I am who I am. WHY am I this way? I guess I could sit down and comtemplate that. And I will, when I get the time [laughs]. That's why I make so few films. Because I want the time to sit and think about things like that. Then we'll talk again, and I'll KNOW. I promise.
